  • Wallowa Lake Lodge (map)

The Wallowa History Center (WHC) was founded by the Wallowa Library in 2001 and achieved

501(c)(3) status in February 2003. They have received and responsibly managed several grants and

private donations since then. WHC has assisted hundreds of individuals with family research and

genealogy, assisted authors and researchers on over 20 published books and research papers,

partnered with the local schools on education projects and presentations including a high school

history publication on the history of the town of Wallowa, developed over 25 historical presentations

and displays for local schools and organizations, publicize a bi-annual newsletter with stories and

photos of regional historical interest, digitized several local historical newspapers in searchable OCR

format and over 5,000 photos.

The WHC currently houses over 4,000 files on historical topics and family names and hundreds of

books, manuscripts, doctoral thesis’ diaries, etc. Most recently, WHC has signed an agreement with

the City of Wallowa to take over the Bear-Sleds Ranger District Headquarters and update it to house

historical documents and in the future expand to a local museum with artifacts, documents, and

displays depicting the history of Wallowa.
